Alberta 1 Manager, Sean Edward, made the following announcement today.
“Earlier this week a deal was confirmed for the trade of team captain Brian Walthall. I received a phone call from Brian Place of lastplace1414 last week stating his interest in Walthall. I knew this could be a good opportunity for everyone involved and after some negotiating a deal was reached, a part of which includes the acquisition of the talented young sprinter, Davin Wann, who will become an instrumental rider for us in the future.”
“This will be the end of an era for Alberta 1, Walthall has done very well this season and everyone on the team will miss him. Brian Place has indicated that he plans to employ Walthall to assist in the creation of a new climbing division for his successful sprinting team, and that Walthall will have an important role on his team “both in the short term and long term.” Walthall has a very bright future with lastplace and we wish him the best of luck.”
“Kolding – Randers will be our farewell climbing race and we are hoping for a podium result. The terrain on this race is perfectly suited to Brian Walthall’s pure climbing skills.”
When interviewed after the announcement an emotional Walthall said, “This is a real shock for me… I had planned to ride for Alberta 1 at least for the rest of this season. I have mixed emotions right now, on one hand I’m excited to begin my future with the lastplace squad, but at the same time it’s heartbreaking to leave the team that gave me a start in pro cycling and invested so much into me.”
“I’m not exactly sure what my role on lastplace1414 will be just yet, but I am prepared to ride my best in whatever role I am given.”
After a long pause he added, “I’m going to do everything I can to win my final race with Alberta 1. This is very important to me, a victory would be the best thing I can do to cap off the start of my career and help give back the team that made me the rider I am.”
